The 20-peso coin will start circulating in the Philippines in 2020 following its ceremonial launch in December 2019, the country’s central bank said.
The new coin will keep the major elements of the existing 20-peso banknote. The 20-peso coins and banknotes will co-exist as legal tender, but the notes will be gradually removed from circulation through natural attrition.
The central bank has not released any official image of the proposed 20-peso coin. Benjamin Diokno, the central bank’s governor, will present official photos and specifications of the coin during its launch.
The central bank will also release in circulation an enhanced 5-peso coin to make it more distinct from other denominations in the New Generation Currency Coin Series.
